INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR ALERT TO EVACUATE TIMER EPL22000

INTRODUCTION

This unit is intended for use on 24v or 50v d.c. two stage fire alarm systems, where it is now a requirement that all systems shall now change from alert to evacuate automatically within a pre-set time, if no action is taken to either silence or reset the system within this period.

The EPL22000 unit meets this requirement by providing delayed automatic changeover from Alert to Evacuate. If necessary, the automatic changeover may be prevented by setting the INHIBIT switch SW1-7 to ‘‘OUT’’.

The incorporation of this unit will not prevent the fire alarm panel from being manually switched to an Evacuate stage by the operation of an Evacuate call point regardless of the position of the Inhibit switch.

The unit consists of a timer board, 4 x loose adhesive stand-offs, metal box, and associated instructions. It should be noted that when used with standard BT fire alarm panels, the metal box will not normally be required, as there is usually room for the board to be mounted in the main panel. The metal box is intended for use in situations where the control panel is crowded and with other systems where there may be insufficient room within the panel.

1. CHECK ITEMS INCLUDED.

Open the packaging and check that the following items are included:-

i) Metal box.

ii) Main timer printed wiring board, mounted on stand-offs within the box.

iii) Connection lead from timer board TBA/1&4 - terminated with 2 pin plug.

iv) Connection leads from timer board TBA/5&6, for connection to sounder lines

v) 4 x printed wiring board adhesive stand-offs.

vi) Mounting screws for metal box.

2. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE - EPL2000 STANDARD PANELS

(See also drawing EPL22006, click here to view (20k file)

i) Open the metal box - a security screwdriver, as supplied with EPL2000 panels will be required for this. If one is not available, a suitable driver is available from RS Components under their stock number 541-977, or from EVASAFE PRODUCTS LIMITED., part No. 07-211.

ii) Remove the timer board from the screwed stand-offs, and retain the loose adhesive stand-offs.

iii) Discard the metal box assembly and screw mounted stand-offs.

iv) Fit the loose adhesive stand-offs to the timer board.

v) Open the front panel of the relevant fire alarm control panel.

vi) Remove all power from the control panel as per instructions for the panel.

vii) Mount the timer board using the stand-offs, as shown in below to the main control board. Ensure that the timer board connection block is towards the left-hand side of the main control board.

viii) Connect main board TB5/G to timer board TBA/5.

ix) Connect main board TB5/J to timer board TBA/6.

x) Insert the plug leading from timer board TBA/1&4 into the main board PL5, which is located at the top right hand corner. Check that SW1-8 is ‘‘IN’’ position.

xi) Re-connect power to the control panel.

EPL22000 BOARD MOUNTING

xii) Operate the fire alarm in the alert mode, to check automatic changeover.

NOTE: It may be advisable to temporarily inhibit sounder operation for this test to prevent annoyance to the building occupants.

xiii) Check that the ‘‘INHIBIT’’ switch SW1-7 is set to ‘‘IN’’ and that when the alarm is first operated the green LED indicator on the timer board is lit, and the system changes to evacuate within approximately 10 minutes.

xiv) Check that when the system changes to evacuate the red LED is lit.

xv) The timer is pre-set for approximately 10 minutes changeover time. Should a different time be required, e.g. due to local fire authority requirements, this should be set by the DIL switches SW1-1 to SW1-6. This allows the time to be set in approximately 15 second increments, and the time settings are additive. As an example, to set a time of 5 minutes, the 2nd and 4th switch up should be set to ‘‘in’’.

xvi) Installation is now complete, and the front panel of the fire alarm control panel should be secured, and the enabling keys removed.

3. INSTALLATION PROCEDURE - NON EPL STANDARD PANELS

i) Open the metal box - a security screwdriver, as supplied with EPL panels will be required for this. If one is not available, a suitable driver is available from RS Components under their stock number 541-977, or from EVASAFE PRODUCTS LIMITED part No 07-211.

ii) Open the front panel of the relevant fire alarm control panel.

iii) Remove all power from the control panel.

iv) Connect timer board TBA/5&6 to single stage sounder output from panel. (Evacuate-only Sounder Circuit).

v) Connect timer board TBA/7&8 to sounder external circuit. See Fig 2.

vi) Remove the connection lead from timer board TBA/1&4 and discard.

vii) Connect the timer board relay connections (TBA/1 and 4) as appropriate to either the nearest evacuate call point, or to the evacuate call point connection within the control panel. For systems complying with BS5839 Part 1:1988, TBA/1&4 should be used. For earlier systems, using a short circuit type of call point (‘‘make’’ to alarm), it will be necessary to switch SW1/8 to ‘‘IN’’, to remove the normally present 470 ohm resistor from the call point circuit.

For very early systems, using an open circuit or line disconnection type of call point, (break to alarm) TBA/2&3 should be used. SW1/8 has no effect in this arrangement.

viii) Re-connect power to the control panel.

ix) Operate the fire alarm in the alert mode, to check automatic changeover. NOTE: It may be advisable to inhibit sounder operation for this test to prevent annoyance to occupants.

x) Check that when the system is first operated, the green LED indicator on the timer board is lit, and the system changes to evacuate within approximately 10 minutes.

xi) Also check that when the system changes to evacuate the red LED is lit.

xii) The timer is pre-set for approximately 10 minutes changeover time. Should a different time be required, e.g. due to local fire authority requirements, this should be set by the DIL switch SW1. This allows the time to be set in approximately 15 second increments, and the time settings are additive. As an example, to set a time of 5 minutes, the 2nd and 4th switches up should be set to ‘‘in’’.

xiii) Installation is now complete, and the front panel of the fire alarm control panel should be secured, and the enabling keys removed.

STAFF AWARENESS

Once the automatic changeover is enabled, the relevant staff should be made aware of the facility. In particular, the Fire Precautions Officer (FPO) and Buildings Manager MUST be informed, and they must be made to realise the implications of the facility. It must be stressed to them, and anyone else who may be involved in control of the fire alarm system, that failure to take some action within the changeover period will result in evacuation of the building.

It is also the responsibility of the FPO to ensure that the building fire alarm instructions are amended accordingly.
