EPL3000 BATTERY CHARGER 2B

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

INTRODUCTION

The Battery Charger 2B is a 24 volt 2 amp charger for use with the Fire Alarm Panels EPL2000, EPL2130 and other battery backed systems.

1. FIXING

Remove the front panel screws with the security screwdriver provided with the Fire Alarm Panel. Remove any internal transit packing and rechargeable lead acid batteries.

Remove the mating ‘‘knock-outs’’ in the Fire Alarm Panel and Charger to allow unit connection. The battery/charger unit can now be mounted using 2 x 4mm screws inserted down through the bottom face of the Fire Alarm Panel into the tapped bushes in the top face of the battery/charger unit. Fit a brass 20mm coupling bush through the mating ‘‘knock-outs’’ to prevent cable chafing.

Before fixing to the wall, it is necessary to set the Voltage Selection slide switch, on the rear of the unit to either the 115v or 230v position according to the local mains voltage.

Having set the voltage selector switch, fix the case to the wall with size 8 screws through the bosses on the back of the panel taking care not to damage the printed circuit board.

2. CONNECTIONS.

Input supply TBA - L 115/230V A.C.live.

N Neutral.

E Earth.

When coupling up to a Fire Panel a separate earth link should be strapped between the earth points on each enclosure. DO NOT RELY ON FIXING SCREWS FOR EARTHING.

Fire Alarm 8B may be equipped, if ordered at the time of manufacture, with built- in fault extension facilities.

3. FUSE RATINGS.

F1. 5 x 20mm 315mA anti-surge ceramic (R.S. 419-729) Mains i/p

F2. 5 x 20mm 3.15A anti-surge (R.S. 415-610) Transformer secondary

F3. 5 x 20mm 3.15A quick blow. (R.S. 416-360) Battery supply

To change the F1 (Mains Input) fuse, first ensure that the mains supply has been disconnected, remove the protective cover by gripping at the ends and tilting forwards. Remember to replace the cover following fuse replacement.

4. SETTING UP PROCEDURE.

All units are supplied factory set for use with 24V (2.3v/cell charge rate) sealed lead acid batteries, but should the unit require re-aligning the following procedure should be adopted. The batteries should be fully charged in order to adjust the charger low current indicator correctly.

A. Charging rate.

1. Disconnect internal batteries.

2. Connect -ve of a calibrated digital D.C. voltmeter to TBB-1.

Connect +ve of the voltmeter on 50v range to D5 cathode (FS3 end).

3. Adjust VR1 to read + 27.6v on voltmeter.

4. Disconnect voltmeter and reconnect batteries.

TAKE CARE TO ENSURE CORRECT POLARITY CONNECTION TO BATTERIES. PERMANENT DAMAGE WILL RESULT TO THE CHARGER & FIRE PANEL IF INCORRECTLY CONNECTED.

B. Sounder supply.

The sounder supply is derived from a separate fixed +24v regulator, IC1. No adjustment is provided.

C. Charger High/Low Voltage and Battery Low Voltage Indicators.

These Indicators are controlled by a circuit using a precision reference diode and high stability 1% tolerance resistors. No adjustment is provided.

D. Battery Charger Current Low Current Indicator.

1.Adjust VR2 to a position such that when a battery lead is disconnected the front panel Battery Low Current indicator operates. Reconnection of the battery lead should extinguish the indicator.

2.Fully alarm the Fire Alarm equipment. (Ensure all zones alarmed) and repeat test 1 above. Reset the system.

3.With the system now in its quiescent state, disconnect a battery lead and ensure the Battery Low Current indicator operates. Reconnect the battery and the indicator should extinguish.

4.It may be necessary to repeat steps 1 to 3 two or three times to ensure correct operation of the Battery Fault indicator under all load conditions.

Suitable Batteries

Only Sealed Rechargeable Lead Acid Batteries of the types listed below are to be used with this unit.

2 off 12v 4.0AH in series. Item code EPL08-214 (Order 1 set per charger)

These batteries should be changed at 4 yearly intervals, or as directed by the unit manufacturer. It is advisable to label batteries with installation date.

Fully charged spare batteries are also available for immediate despatch by contacting the equipment manufacturer.

If in doubt as to the suitability of the batteries specified for a particular installation, contact the equipment manufacturer who will advise on the course of action to be followed.

NOTE 1

The Fire Alarm Panels Series 2000 are usually supplied with two diodes, D5 & D6 that enable the fire alarm panel to be powered by a single 24 or 50 Volt supply. These diodes are located between the two monitor cards on the main fire alarm control. (Similarly Fire Alarm Panels Series 2130 are supplied with diode D2 located between the heat sink and PL2/TBA).

In each case these diodes must be cut out of circuit on all Fire Alarm Panels Series 2000/2130 that are to be powered by Battery Charger 2B.

It is important that the Installation Card supplied with this equipment is completed and posted as soon as the equipment is installed. This will ensure that both user and installer are kept informed of equipment modifications etc.
